Graphic Design BA(Hons)

What work are you exhibiting in the Graduate Show 2012 - Up and Beyond?

I began this work by exploring the ideas around truth, in particular the idea that truth is relative to each individual. This led me to visiting Brighton and Hove Spiritualist Church to experience the demonstrations of Mediumship. The video and series of posters I created explore the techniques mediums use to convince participants that what they are saying is the truth.

My background:

I’m originally from Manchester and completed a foundation course at Manchester Metropolitan University. Before Foundation I was convinced I would go on to do a course in Textiles or Fine Art, but became interested in Graphic Design and applied to Brighton. It has great reputation for having a really interesting and challenging Graphic Design Course, and the prospect of sun and sea sealed the deal.

This course has completely changed the work I produce and how I produce it.  It has forced me think conceptually and has really challenged me, but it has also been really enjoyable and I feel I have learnt a huge amount.

The tutors on the Graphic Design course are very supportive. The facilities and the in particular the workshop technicians are fantastic.

What would you say to anybody considering this course?

That they must be prepared to work very, very hard and that they should not let criticism harm their confidence.

Getting used to the changes from year to year has been quite challenging.  It’s a big step from first year to second and a huge step from second to third.

After graduation:

I hope to do some internships to gain experience in the industry, and eventually get a job where I can be creative and enjoy my work. I would also love to go traveling and take a bit of time to chill out.
