Bodies Beautiful: Paralympic sportswear and equipment design cross-discipline project led by Malcolm Mcinnes, Academic Programme Leader (Fashion Textiles), Dr Jyri Kermik, Assistant Head of School, Architecture and Design and Tom Ainsworth, MPhil Architecture and Design, originated by Dr Catherine Harper, Head of School of Architecture and Design, Faculty of Arts.

Bodies Beautiful is a Paralympic sportswear and sports equipment design research project, working with the Fashion, Textiles, 3D Design, Materials Practice and Sustainable Design staff and students of the School of Architecture and Design, devising two staff/student/Crew Club projects that will culminate in an exhibition and on‐line publication/image base.

In tandem with its community partners, The Crew Club, and its academic colleagues in Inclusive Arts Practice and Sports Product Design and Sports Science, it draws on knowledge exchange with sportswear and equipment manufacturers and its doctoral research expertise in Knitted Textiles for Body Fit and Product Design for Medical and Physiotherapy Devices, as well as key knowledge in Plastics and Bio‐ and Techno‐materials.

Individual and small groups, benefitting from their practice–led research and self‐directed, self‐generated enhanced knowledge and understanding of this area – will develop design solutions for exhibition.

A schools project runs alongside Bodies Beautiful. This project will enable school and college students to tackle a complex design project, raise their awareness of the particular issues facing Paralympic athletes whilst challenging their ideas about what constitutes a beautiful body. The project will involve local Aimhigher pupils, the Crew Club and Downs View School a special school for pupils who have severe learning difficulties. The aim of the project is to produce a tabard suitable for use in the Paralympic Games. Participants will also be involved in devising a slogan to use on the tabards. The project will start with a conference which will include workshops on a variety of themes.

Bodies Beautiful will be exhibited in July from Monday 19th to Saturday 31st at Jubilee Library, Brighton and Friday 9th to Saturday 31st, group show at Grand Parade Gallery, University of Brighton.
