Design at Brighton is represented through a range of academic and practice specialities. Its success is to be seen in its internationally reputed professors, its partnerships for research and doctoral studies, the far-reaching reputations of its past students and in the dedication of its current staff and students in creating an environment that is creative, productive and professional.

Situated in the heart of Brighton, our work fosters professional excellence and personal creativity in all its members, working in a range of practices in 3Ddesign, smart textiles, material culture and sustainability, user engagement and material craftsmanship.

Our research in design, organised through our Design Research Initiatives (DRi), allows cross-disciplinary collaboration, with major projects being developed both locally and across international borders, involving both staff and students at all levels. Our cross-cutting research themes support the cycle of knowledge exchange and co-development, enabling us to build partnerships, identify and exploit different kinds of impact, deepen its significance and nurture new research ideas.

We share an ongoing reconsideration of what academically engaged design practice can be, considering how it can be actioned and what widespread impact design can have. Our designers work in digital community building, sustainable material cultures, contemporary craft theory and practice, inclusivity and well-being. Those who have worked and studied with us have gone on to become makers and analysts, designers, historians, curators and creatives within the panoply of today's design-focused industries.
