Brighton Interior Architecture and Architecture Society, BIAAS, is a society run by students from the undergraduate and graduate courses, through which they have the opportunity to shape the culture of the department by organising their own exhibitions, events and lecture series.
BIAAS has become a forum for a variety of events including regular socials, life drawings classes and film screenings which contribute to the strong feeling of community, studio culture and camaraderie which characterises these courses at the University of Brighton.
Through BIAAS, Brighton students have taken active roles both in the development of the courses, working to maintain the ethos of the department by organising free lectures and by running a mentoring scheme for the first year intake. The society aims to create a comfortable, friendly and family-like environment for everyone and this is evident through the success of the vertical studios and the encouragement of interaction between the years and courses.
Through BIAAS, students engage with the design of the exhibitions and year book catalogues which document it. The pavilion exhibition space is also built each year by the students and tutors, with funding raised in various ways. Not only is the degree show an opportunity for the students to exhibit their work, but it is an essential tool for networking within the design and architectural circles and is a great chance to be noticed by potential employers.
