Royal College of Physicians, Regent's Park
Students from BA Architecture Studio 01 are exhibiting their design work at the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) as part of Open House (Sunday 21 September). The exhibition coincides with a major exhibition on the architect Denys Lasdun to mark the 50th anniversary of this seminal piece of modernist design.
The studio, taught by Ben Sweeting and Alex Arests, have spent the year working in and around London’s Regent Street, Regent’s Park and Regent’s Canal. The students’ final project was for a new institution or college, similar to the RCP, to be located on what is now the London Zoo Car Park (which was formerly a branch of the Regent’s Canal). Students drew on close studies of the existing context to explore ideas that responded to the distinct character of the area, which was designed by John Nash for the Prince Regent, while also developing these in new directions, mirroring Lasdun’s approach to designing the RCP building.
