This paper will explore how contemporary fiction deals with the past as in the traditional historical novel, but also in a range of other ways. It will also consider how contemporary writings may usefully advance debates in the contemporary philosophy of history and, in turn, how this process can reflect on the wider importance of the use of the past in recent fiction.
