An evening of documentaries and discussion exploring film activism, presented by the University of Brighton’s interdisciplinary research cluster ‘Understanding Conflict: Forms and Legacies of Violence’.
Bringing together scholars, practitioners and film enthusiasts, METACINEMA will explore the role of documentary film as a cultural and historical construction of the past, present and future as experienced. Initially, METACINEMA will consist of a series of events in which we screen a documentary followed by an interactive discussion exploring key themes of the film. The purpose of these events is to explore the uses and values of documentary filmmaking in a critical and thought-provoking way to investigate what can be learnt about lived experiences through their documentation.
The first event will screen Sjećaš li se Sarajeva?/Do you remember Sarajevo? (51’), 2002
Description: A compilation home video footage, filmed by residents of Sarajevo, in which they document the events around them to create a collective memory of the Siege of Sarajevo (1992-1996).
The screening will be followed by discussion.
