Anglo-Indian and South Asian responses to late nineteenth century colonial exhibitions.
By assessing and analysing the widely varying discourse surrounding late nineteenth century colonial exhibitions in both Great Britain and the Indian subcontinent, the aim of the research is to provide a better understanding of both Anglo-Indian and South Asian responses to the colonizing project as a whole. The variety of responses in both the Anglo-Indian and South Asian communities reflects the diversity of the ways in which the British “civilizing mission” were carried out and the manner in which colonization was actually received and followed. Furthermore, the reactions often corresponded to a growing sense of national identity and national consciousness that was developing at the time, providing a more complete picture of the rise in South Asian nationalism in general.
