Interaction between East and West in a Korean Environment
Abstract/Research Questions
To identify and critically examine the historical and philosophical background of Contemporary Korean Art from the 18th Century.
To trace the cycles of influence through 5 stages.
Up to 1900 when China dominated the art world of Korea and Japan, the latter primarily through Korea.
The period between the late nineteenth Century and 1930s Chinese Art was in decline and Western art dominated Japan and Korea, the latter primarily through Japan.
Abstract/Research Questions
The period between 1919-1945 when Korea was part of the Japanese Empire. A period of significant interaction between Japan and the West and when Chinese art had disappeared from view.
The 1970s, when an emergent Korean movement influenced Japan and both Korea and Japan were impacted by developments in the West.
The period from 1980 until present day when Japan and Korea continue to be effected by the West while strengthening their ownnational movements (which in turn fed back to influence the Westand to influence the re-emergence of a Chinese art movement).
To creatively extend and consolidate my own particular art practice through a range of mediums, by appraising and responding to those identified cycles of influence in Contemporary Korean Art.
To present the outcomes of aims 1 and 2 in written form and theaim of 3 in the form of public exhibition.
