CMNH online Symposium: Anti-Racist Research in the Age of Black Lives Matter
Online day symposium on Tuesday 22 June 2021 – Windrush day - organised by the Centre for Memory, Narrative and Histories (CMNH), University of Brighton, East Sussex, UK. The event will take place 10am - 6.30pm GMT on 22 June 2021 online on-line.
With a keynote lecture by Stella Dadzie discussing her latest book A Kick in the Belly: Women, Slavery and Resistance, and with panels on ‘Anti-colonial pasts in the present’, ‘Building Anti-Racist Universities’, ‘Legacies of Sussex slave-ownership and abolitionism’, and ‘Remembering Windrush and its legacies’, this one day symposium aims to hold a conversation about 'doing anti-racist research' in the context of Black Lives Matter, Rhodes Must Fall, decolonising the curriculum and other initiatives in HE and wider anti-racist activism.
Speakers include Mike Anderson, Cathy Bergin, Paris Connolly, Ursula Edgington, Prof Richard Hall, Marlon Moncrieffe, Patricia Neville, Anita Rupprecht, Gill Scott, Lukasz Swiatek, Vedrana Velickovic, and the keynote lecture by Stella Dadzie.
Stella Dadzie will be discussing her latest book A Kick in the Belly: Women, Slavery and Resistance and how the principles of anti-racism informed her research and her writing process. Stella Dadzie is a founder member of OWAAD (Organisation of Women of African and Asian Descent), a national umbrella group that emerged in the late 1970s as part of the British Civil Rights movement. She is best known for The Heart of the Race: Black Women’s Lives in Britain (London: Virago, 1985), which won the 1985 Martin Luther King Award for Literature, and which she co-authored with Beverley Bryan and Suzanne Scafe. She has written widely on curriculum development and good practice with black adult learners and other minorities. She is well known for her contribution to tackling youth racism and working with racist perpetrators, and is a key contributor to the development of anti-racist strategies with schools, colleges and youth services. Her most recent book, A Kick in the Belly: Women, Slavery and Resistance (London: Verso, 2020), was published late last year to much acclaim.
