Sam Carroll's doctoral thesis focused on the Committee of 100, an anti-nuclear protest group designed to promote mass non-violent direct action in order to push for governmental changes in defence policy.
She is an oral historian with a wide range of experience in both the academic and community arenas across many research projects as trainer, tutor, project worker, project manager, student mentor and oral history consultant. She has a doctorate in Life History Research (University of Sussex, 2010) and is a member of the Oral History Society, a working group member of the Centre for Life History and Life Writing at the University of Sussex, an Associate of the Higher Education Academy and is on the management committee of QueenSpark Books.
She is the Community Heritage Researcher for the AHRC funded Gateways to the First World War Public Engagement Centre. She was employed as an Associate Tutor at the University of Sussex (2004 to 2012), teaching on access, graduate and postgraduate level programmes. She has also delivered life history research skills to volunteers on a variety of funded projects (ESF, HEESF, HLF, Grundvig and JISC).
Projects that Sam has worked on include The Our Hospital Our History project, an oral history of Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals Trust's acute hospitals; Hidden Histories (three strands: Education, Rural and Migrant), a European project for the CCE at the University of Sussex, The History of Homelessness in Brighton for Brighton Housing Trust, The People's Park Project: An Oral History of The Level as a freelance consultant and volunteer trainer for Brighton and Hove City Council, The Ale and Hearty project as project manager and resource facilitator for Strike a Light community arts organisation and Brighton Transformed (a history of Brighton's Transgender Communities) for QueenSparks Books as book editor and volunteer co-ordinator.
