The Last Stand for Japanese Crafts? Design history behind bars. Talk by Professor Yasuko Suga, Tsuda College, Japan.
Little is known about who produces the visual and spiritual emblem of the Japanese traditional festival, "mikoshi" - a portable shrine. It is the embodiment of craftsmanship, yet professional craftspeople are not the only artists. In fact, many are made in prison. This lecture will shed light on perhaps the remotest sphere of craft and consider how craft has come to terms with the unrivalled citadel of Fordism and the power of control.
