UK Ties with the Gulf Arab Monarchies
Time for a change?
12th March 2019 | 6.30pm - 8.00pm | Edward Street Lecture Theatre
The UK's ties with Saudi Arabia and the Gulf Arab monarchies are under the spotlight as never before. The war in Yemen has become a humanitarian catastrophe, and the disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi quickly escalated into an international scandal. What's really behind Britain's alliances with these authoritarian regimes? Where does the balance of power in the relationship really lie? And how difficult would it be to break these ties?
Dr David Wearing is the author of "AngloArabia: Why Gulf Wealth Matters To Britain" (Polity, 2018). He is a Teaching Fellow in International Relations at Royal Holloway, University of London, where he lectures on US foreign policy and the political economy of the Middle East. He has contributed comment and analysis for the BBC, Sky News, ITN, CNN, the Guardian, the Independent and Novara Media.
