Mine, By Chance

At three months old I was adopted from Chile and came to live in England. Highly aware of my heritage whilst growing up, my curiosity and fascination grew with the discovery of a brother I have never met. The mystery surrounding his existence and importantly the significance of my birthplace has motivated and inspired this piece of work.

A fracture in geography and detachment from my native Chile, has affected the way I think about myself, propelling me to observe the life I lead in England. Fuelled by this desire to speculate on what might have been, has lead me to produce a series of portraits, landscapes and still lives that culminate to form the basis of my work. This project documents my surroundings in an archival way, through the inclusion of people, places and objects that hold significance to my life as it is. I am preserving a memory of a present situation whilst allowing myself to imagine how different my life could have been.
