My work investigates portraits from mid-seventeenth century to mid-nineteenth century belonging to the Museum of National History at Frederiksborg Castle. For decades portraits have been considered an unreliable source for dress history, because portraits do not render dress truthfully. It is my opinion that portraits can be regarded as fashion pictures as, just like fashion photography, they reflect atmosphere, body language and fashionable dress. Both media reflect ideals of a period more than aim to reflect reality. In my presentation I will give examples from the seventeenth century.
