THE WINNING 10 HEADPHONE TRACKS:

We had a great response to our call for headphone pieces. The following works were selected for inclusion for the LISTEN! event.

LA COSA PREZIOSA - Drama - The unexpected in field recording I (2011 Field recording, 1min, stereo, AIFF) - This miniature drama holds in itself an insight into the universal fears that we all share as natural creatures.

PATRICIA AFARI - HeadSpace  -  A binaural soundscape is about fear and control imposed on people across the world though psychological and emotional conditioning. The piece uses sonic metaphors to reflect the presence of this conditioning in everyday life.

JAMES JOSLIN - Constructions in Iron and Rust - Formed of recordings from Brighton's two piers and their surrounding areas the piece amplifies the hidden sounds of Brighton's most famous structures.  Using contact microphones,  the structures were excited, either by the sea or by the composer, bringing to life the inner sounds of the landmarks.

STURQEN - Sonest - Sturqen are César Rodrigues and David Arantes, a duo from Portugal. Their music explores a vast amount of sonic rhythms where a techno-trance universe is combined with  constant noise.

DINAH BIRD - Vito Goes to the Dentist  - The binaural mic picked up every rotation of the oral drill and every word spoken at reception. Mixed with a 1977 Vito Acconci recording “Ten Packed Minutes,” an early conceptual work featuring excerpts of Leon Redbone, Cow Cow Davenport, Eric Dolphy, Karl Berger and Ornette Coleman.

CLICK NILSON - Instructions - This relaxing exercise by Click Nilson should reveal the full (anti?)-algorithmic splendour of the listener's mind as they non-deterministically parse the messages concealed within. For private headphones listening only, using a portable audio player.

JACK CHUTER (AKA VACUUS) - IOTM  - Created using guitar and oscillator synthesiser.

DANIEL ALEXANDER HIGNELL - There is No More Firmament -  takes the theories of three practitioners who deal with the theme of immersion as the conceptual structure for a new work. It relies therefore on three immersive devices - repetition (La Monte Young), cacophony (Antonin Artaud) and acoustic complexity (R. Murray Shafer).

VIRGILIO OLIVEIRA - 27 December - is a musician and sound artist currently residing in London. At present, he is finishing a degree in Sound Arts and Design at the London College of Communication.

SOL REZZA - Preguntas (Questions) - Who wasn’t ever afraid?  Who hasn’t felt like dust?  Who saw the fall of a leaf?  Who did not draw over fogged glass? Who didn’t wanted to be a soap bubble? Who knows anything? Who knows nothing? Soundscapes: Municipal vivarium at Amecameca – recorded by Sol Rezza.
