Beach Party Animal - Directed by Liz Aggiss and Joe Murray

Beach Party Animal is a 20-minute film portrait of British eccentricity and Brighton beach life. Set over twenty-four hours in high season, where the land meets the sea and people come to be and be seen, we observe through sumptuous cinematography, private moments in public places. The sleepers, peepers, spinners and swimmers, drinkers, thinkers, lovers and grubbers gather for fun in the sun, and into the night. Directed by award winning film makers Liz Aggiss (Czech Crystal Prague Golden Film, Special Jury Golden Award Houston, Best Woman Film Media Waves Hungary), and Joe Murray (BAFTA Grierson Award nominee), and accompanied by an original score by Alan Boorman (Wevie Stonder), Beach Party Animal is scattered with guerrilla performers who seamlessly infiltrate with an oblivious and equally unconventional public.

Beach Party Animal was commissioned by South East Dance and supported by the Arts Council England, Esmee Fairbirn, Brighton & Hove City Council, Jerwood Charitable Foundation and The University of Brighton Faculty Research Fund.

Liz Aggiss is a performer, choreographer, screen dance film-maker and Professor at the University of Brighton. She is an un-disciplined artist with an un-disciplined body of work. Dodging categorization and being classified as unclassifiable, has been a full time job. Blurring the boundaries between high art and popular culture, she makes expressionistic, uncompromising, challenging work characterized by a trademark grotesque stylized performance vocabulary. She has toured her live and screen work nationally and internationally since 1980, and received the Bonnie Bird Choreography Award1994 and an Arts Council Dance Fellowship in 2003. Awards for her screen dance films include; Motion Control Czech Crystal Prague Golden Film Festival 2002, Special Jury Golden Award Houston 2003 Best Woman Film Media Waves Hungary 2003: Anarchic Variations Romanian National Office of Cinematography Award 2003, Special Jury Mention "Il Coreografo Elettronico" Napolidanza 2004: Men in the Wall Dance Camera West LA Award 2007 for Innovation in the field of Dance Media. Her work is featured on Take 7 published by South East Dance, Dance for Camera 2 published by firstrunfeatures.com and Forward Motion published by The British Council and South East Dance.

Joe Murray is a freelance film-maker and was nominated for a BAFTA Grierson Award 2002 for his Channel 4 documentary Scandal in the Bins. He was the Series Director for the screen dance package Forward Motion, best of British screen dance, published by The British Council and South East Dance 2010.  Liz and Joe collaborated on the dance film short Diva winning the Hong Kong Jumping Frames Screen Dance Award 2008.
