Catherine Watts lectures and researches in English language history and issues around foreign language teaching and learning.
Catherine is a National Teaching Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and is director of Routes into Languages (South). Her scholarly work has included English language etymology, pedagogy in language learning and the decline of language learning in Britain.
Catherine Watts was appointed a National Teaching Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in 2015 recognition of her services to education in her field. She is currently director of the Routes into Languages South project.
Catherine leads the teaching of English language history at the university. She also has scholarly interests in the field of modern languages in education and has published on the decline in the take-up of modern languages at degree level, the drop out from German foreign language study between AS and A2 levels and the decline in numbers of MFL students at degree level. Her Doctorate in Education (EdD) at King’s College, University of London, explored the decline in the take-up of modern languages at degree level and the research led to four subsequent research awards.
She has also explored the effects of part-time paid employment on academic performance, German language children's literature and the role of the moderators in group interviews.
Her teaching includes contributions to the EdD, PGCE and MA in Education at the University of Brighton School of Education.
