Elisa Lega lectures in Interior Architecture with research interests that examine the "in-between" spaces of the urban environment.
This research focuses on the dynamic and transitional urban spaces with a view to practical intervention in the developing urban landscape.
Elisa Lega completed her education in Interior Architecture and Interior Design at Politecnico di Milano where she also gained her PhD, Doctoral program in Design, with the dissertation title of ‘A transdisciplinary investigation of the role of Spatial Design for the understanding of In-between urban spaces’, analysing new spatial conditions within the urban transformation processes.
"In-between urban spaces" can be summarised as intermediate and uncertain spaces, with strong physical, relational and time characteristics, of connection or disconnection with their surroundings, through which it is possible to conceive of new dynamics capable of generating a renewed value of space and interaction.
Her research fields are related to the contemporary dynamic condition of urban spaces in order to define innovative strategies to give them value through Spatial Design approaches and practices:
She researched in particular on Spatial Design for In-between urban spaces (‘A transdisciplinary investigation of the role of Spatial Design for the understanding of In-between urban spaces’, Elisa Lega, PhD thesis in Design, 2012). Interpreting In-between urban spaces as a dynamic semantic system of liminal places in the contemporary territories, as intermediate and uncertain spaces with strong physical or relational or temporal values of connection/disconnection with the nearby, in which there is potential to activate new dynamics/relations capable to generate spatial quality with the surroundings.
Since 2006 Elisa has been collaborating with INDACO Department – Industrial Design, Arts, Communication and Fashion – Politecnico di Milano where in 2009 she also joined the Spatial Design Teamwork, a research group dealing with the spreading of new typologies of spaces and places in the territory of the third millennium.
