Jeffrey P Turko is an architect lecturing in architectural design with a focus on digital creativity.
He is the founder of NEKTON design studio and Research Director in the OCEAN Design and Research Association. His research focuses on the primary architectural elements of the buildings envelope and ground condition.
Jeffrey P. Turko lectures in architecture. He is an American born architect, registered in the Netherlands who is an educator and researcher currently based in London. He is a graduate of the Architectural Association School of Architecture where he received his diploma in 1999. Soon after his studies he founded the design practice NEKTON Studio. A design studio that works on projects ranging in scales form urban design, private houses, art installations and objects. NEKTON Studio's work has been published and exhibited widely and represented the UK in the Beijing Biennial 2008. As well as being in the running for the Young Architects of the Year Award in the UK in the same year.
He is also a Board Member and Research Director in the OCEAN Design and Research Association. He has been involved with OCEAN since 1999 before becoming a full member of OCEAN in 2007 he was an instrumental collaborator on projects such as Landsc[r]aper - Urban Ring Bridge and the World Centre for Human Concerns. A project that is now part of the Prints and Photographs Division of the Library of Congress in the United States and is in the collection of the FRAC Centre (Fonds Regional d'Art Contemporain) in Orléans, France. Since joining he was involved in the Membrella project, a shortlisted proposal for a workspace of the future. Recently he has co-authored the following essays and chapters on OCEAN in the following books: ‘OCEAN Design Research Association’ in Performalism [Routledge 2011] and ‘Research by Design in the Context of the OCEAN Design Research Association’ Design Innovation for the Built Environment Research by Design and the Renovation of Practice [Routledge 2012].
Jeff joined The University of Brighton in 2011 as a Senior Lecturer in Architectural Design with a focus on digital creativity. Currently his role is as studio leader on the Masters of Architecture programme. He has been teaching since 1999 and has previously been a Senior Lecturer at the University of East London from 2001–2011, as well as having taught at the Architectural Association School of Architecture where he was unit master of Diploma Unit 12 from 2008 -2010. He is also the Program Director of the AA Global Visiting School in Sydney Australia. He has been an invited critic at institutions such as the Technical University of Vienna, UCLA, U-Penn, The AA School, University of Technology Sydney, London Metropolitan University, and KTH Stockholm.
His current research focus is on the primary architectural elements of the buildings envelope and ground condition. He is the director of a research area in OCEAN on this subject and co-authored a title with Michael Hensel for Routledge publishing entitled Grounds and Envelopes: Reshaping Architecture and the Built Environment.
