English Language Teacher Development
Graduation day 2011 for our masters students in English language teaching
The English Language Teacher Development programme at the University of Brighton Faculty of Arts offers a portfolio of internationally recognised language teaching qualifications. Our diploma and MA courses are well known, particularly for their focus on the use of media and digital technologies.
We offer programmes for both experienced teachers and for those just starting out. You can choose to study full-time or part-time to fit in with your work commitments. We are a member of 'English UK' and one of a limited number of British universities selected by the British Council to receive Hornby Educational Trust scholarship students. We are also an institutional member of The British Association of Lecturers in English for Academic Purposes (BALEAP).
On our postgraduate teacher development programmes You will benefit from being taught by academics who are active researchers. This ensures that our courses incorporate the latest ideas in language teaching. Our tutors also understand first-hand what it is like to teach English in a variety of educational contexts. They are themselves all experienced language teaching professionals.
Our courses are delivered using blended learning programmes. These combine taught classes; peer discussion and study; face-to-face tutorials; plus access to materials, and contact with tutors and fellow students using online tools. Our award-winning virtual learning environment, studentcentral, will be a key element in your studies with us.
The disciplines of language studies and linguistics at the University of Brighton Faculty of Arts attract funding from a wide range of organisations. For example we were recently awarded £600,000 to lead one of four national consortia to promote language learning in UK schools. And in another innovative project, we are providing English language support for refugees who are interested in entering higher education.
We work closely with our colleagues in the University of Brighton School of Education, one of the largest providers of teacher education in the country with an excellent national reputation. Each year hundreds of our graduates take up positions in UK schools. The School of Education is also home to the Education Research Centre, a community of around 60 research students and 20 staff. Major areas of research activity include:professional development of teachers, international education, creativity, ICT in education, narratives of learning and evaluation of educational policy.
Students graduating from our masters degree and graduate diploma programmes have benefited from wide range of career and job opportunities in academic management, teacher training and learning materials design and publishing.
The degrees in our English Language Teacher Development subject area are principally taught at our Falmer Campus.
