Saturday courses

Screenprinting | Etching | Lithography

There is a strong tradition of Fine Art Printmaking at the University of Brighton stretching back over 40 years. Brighton is one of the very few UK universities to offer a stand-alone degree in Printmaking as part of its undergraduate programme. As a consequence the facilities for Etching, Screenprinting and Lithography at Brighton are impressive in scale and the accumulated skills and knowledge base unique in scope and depth.

These courses offer concentrated experience in of one of three processes: screenprinting, etching or lithography.

The first phase is an induction into workshop practices. Whatever your previous experience, this element demonstrates the workings of the print processes on two levels: safe and efficient use of the facilities; and the potential for developing a vocabulary to express ideas.

Through critical discussion you will begin to recognise correlations between what a medium can offer and what you intend to produce.

Throughout the course you are introduced to key concepts and issues that are implicit in contemporary practice.

Thee is a maximum of 8 places in each class

A chance to explore the possibilities of this highly versatile medium using both simple hand-made and autographic methods combined with photographic stencil-making techniques.

Evening courses

Etching | Lithography | Screenprinting

Etching

Wed | 1800–2030

The aim of this class is to present etching as a creative process and to enable students to gain a sound practical knowledge of the techniques involved in line and tone, black and white and colour.

Each student is encouraged to appreciate the versatility of the medium and to use it to develop their own personal imagery.

Lithography

Tue | 1800–2030

The aim of this class is to present lithography as a creative, non-mechanistic process, and to enable students to gain a sound practical knowledge of the printing techniques involved.

Lithography uses a superimposed grain on a thin metal plate to reproduce an image. The image is first drawn in grease and, using the rejection of water to grease, this image is transported to paper from the plate.

Screenprinting

Tue and Wed | 1800–2030

This class provides an opportunity to experiment with the exciting process of printmaking and learn how to produce colour silkscreen prints using hand-drawn and photographic methods. Suitable for beginners and experienced students.

NB. We run the same class on Tuesday and Wednesday. Please indicate which evening you would like to attend.
