Fashion with Business Studies
Introduction

- From December 2010, our programme in Fashion with Business Studies allows a single title to represent all features of the courses formerly advertised separately: these were the four-year Fashion Design with Professional Experience BA(Hons), three-year Fashion Design with Business Studies BA(Hons) and four-year Fashion with Business Studies MDes.
- Our Fashion with Business Studies courses prepare you for work in the fashion design or fashion related industries.
- In your second year, you will select from two distinct pathways leading to BA(Hons) or MDes. The choice is made with your tutors' help, depending on your own specific needs and interests.
- Our teaching team offers you expertise in research skills, concept development and the production of a womenswear or menswear garment collection, or production of an alternative fashion product.
Overview
Introduction
This course prepares you for work in the fashion design or fashion-related industries.
Course structure
structure Year 1 is the same for students on the BA(Hons) and MDes integrated masterslevel award. You will develop the technical skills of fashion design, including pattern cutting, draping and garment manufacture, while exploring the cultural and commercial contexts of fashion.
In year 2 design projects will broaden your knowledge of different fashion market sectors. Projects are diverse and will test your design skills. You will develop your communication skills, and build a body of design work and garment samples to add to your portfolio. You may also complete an industrial placement year following year 2.
During year 2 we will help you decide which final award suits your study needs. If aiming for the BA(Hons), in your final year you will design and make a collection of market-specific outfits for either womenswear or menswear. You will also produce a professional portfolio of design work, a dissertation and business plan.
Alternatively, on the MDes, over the final two years you will complete an industrial placement module, and formulate a personal research question from which you will produce a collection of garments or develop an alternative fashion product. This could be art direction of your own magazine or design for an industry that requires specific clothing knowledge.
