Faculty celebrates 150th anniversary in 2009
To celebrate 150 years since the founding of Brighton School of Art, a series of celebratory activities included publication of a book, Art and Design at Brighton 1859-2009: from Arts and Manufactures to the Creative and Cultural Industries; an exhibition of work by alumni, staff and associates From Art School to University: Art and Design at Brighton 1859-2009, and a conference discussed future possibilities in art and design education.
Contributors from staff and students, past and present included: Turner Prize winners Keith Tyson and Rachel Whiteread, artist Alison Lapper, fashion designers Barbara Hulanicki and Julien MacDonald, sculptor Anthony Gormley, Kate Greenaway Medal winners Emily Gravett, Raymond Briggs and Quentin Blake and Magnum photographer Mark Power.
The events highlighted the contribution to modern visual culture by Brighton Faculty of Arts and Architecture members including Royal Designer for Industry George Hardie's cover designs for Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon, Hamish Makgill's cover for Fat Boy Slim's You've Come a Long Way Baby and John Vernon Lord's sleeve for Deep Purple's Book of Taliesyn, book characters such as Raymond Briggs' the Snowman and Fungus the Bogeyman, and Alison Lapper's iconic work.
The Faculty of Arts and Architecture, Brighton, joined to celebrate the exceptional range of individuals who have contributed to our 150 year history and its contribution to society, culture and industry. Today, based on this rich history, we see a multi-disciplinary, international Faculty offering a range of undergraduate, postgraduate and research opportunities, one which is home to students and staff who will take the Faculty into the future.
