Torunn Kjølberg (CETLD funded PhD student) has recently been appointed Learning and Teaching Officer for the national Design History Society.

The role was established in recognition of the Society’s aim of fostering student participation and scholarship in the subject, offering information, advice and support for those involved in teaching and learning.
The intellectual and academic health of any academic discipline relies on the new generations entering the field challenging and rewriting its boundaries, methods and knowledge. Design History has an inherent relationship to education and practice, having provided generations of design students with historical and critical perspectives on their field, and in turn, having made the work and practice of many of these former students the subject of our study. The University of Brighton is an example of how growth of the discipline has followed symbiotically the successful expansion of undergraduate and postgraduate courses within the History of Design and related subjects.
In this role she aims to encourage debates around learning and teaching practices in Design History and related subjects. This is also an opportunity to campaign for students’ use of archives and museum collections, providing support for both museum and archive staff, teachers and students. Online discussion forums, further development of learning and teaching resources, seminars, workshops and symposia, are some of the initiatives she hopes to facilitate.
Torunn follows in the footsteps of other Faculty personnel who have played an active part in the Society's administration, including Professor Jonathan Woodham (Editorial Board, Journal of Design History); Dr Lesley Whitworth (Committee Member, 1997-2002); and Jill Seddon (current Co-ordinator, DHS Essay Prize).
