For the fourth edition, Brighton Photo Biennial 2010 presents New Documents guest curated by the internationally renowned photographer, editor and curator Martin Parr. BPB 2010: New Documents will be the world’s first frame-free celebration of contemporary photography, showcasing the very best work from a new generation of practitioners and the latest vernacular discoveries in venues and public spaces across the city of Brighton and Hove, inviting visitors and residents to be involved through an active process of discovery and participation. As Parr observes: “All the work will be new, and on the cutting edge of photography. In my travels round the world, I have been seeking out new photography from Japan, Asia and Latin America, as well as Europe, the UK and America. Brighton Photo Biennial will be about the process of discovery, with opportunities to see and engage with exciting contemporary work.”
The Biennial will be easily accessible by foot to all those living in and visiting Brighton & Hove. As Parr observes: “As guest curator, I want to make this photography event fresh, distinctive and focused on Brighton & Hove. This city has a natural cultural constituency of its own, and its proximity to London promises a potentially huge audience. We shall present work in places that will really bring photography to the eye of the public. By presenting the very best new work in an exciting and imaginative way, Brighton Photo Biennial 2010 will put photography in Brighton & Hove on the international map.”
Through the exhibition programme, confirmed photographers include: Stephen Gill, Rinko Kawauchi, Molly Landreth, Alec Soth and Zoe Strauss, all of whom are commissioned to produce new work in response to the contexts, environs and communities of Brighton & Hove. The keynote exhibition, will explore new conceptual trends and aesthetic innovations demonstrated through the work of up to ten emerging international photographers. An ambitious exhibition of vernacular photography, entitled House of Vernacular, will be produced drawn from seven internationally acclaimed collections.
