W H Mayall (1923-1998) began his career as a draughtsman in the aviation industry. In 1959 he moved to the Council of Industrial Design, later becoming Senior Projects Officer. He lectured, wrote articles and books, liased with industry and mounted conferences and exhibitions. This collection of papers reflects all aspects of his work and also the design education projects that he undertook after retirement. They reveal his frustration with the limitations in the Council's approach to its task and the alternative vision he evolved for it.
