Over the last decade Kielder has developed a reputation for commissioning new and innovative works of art, architecture and artist/architect collaborations drawing from an international array of practitioners. In recent years the Kielder Partnership's commissioning programme has been listed in the top ten of the RIBA's top one hundred best clients survey and commissions have won the Stephen Lawrence Prize as well as RIBA and Civic Trust Awards.
Earlier this year they completed the Kielder Observatory, a project that developed out of the most popular RIBA competition of recent years. The large timber building was designed by London based Charles Barclay Architects.
Other landmarks include; Wave Chamber - Chris Drury 1997. Belvedere - Softroom Architects 1999, Kielder Skyspace - James Turrell 2000, Minotaur Maze - Coombe and Kitchen 2003, Mapping Minigolf - Wolfgang Weileder 2006,Mirage - Kisa Kawakami 2006, and Play Garden - Zone Architects 2006.
Current commissions due for completion by March 2009 include Deadwater Shelter - David Adjaye, Cock Stoor Shelter - 16 Makers, Silvas Capitalis (Forest Head) - Simparch, Robin and Freya's Huts - Studio Weave, And Janus Chairs - Ryder Architecture.
