Andre's presentation titled, “Designing the 21st Century Town – the challenge of building a self sustaining urban environment” will present an overview of recent design research exploring the role of productive urban landscapes as an adaptation strategy for Towns and Cities as they plan for climate change and peak oil. The presentation will introduce Bohn & Viljoen’s design research focussing on urban agriculture, show international examples of designs integrating landscape and building strategies and speculate on ways of communicating these ideas, which if implemented require some fundamental shifts in ways we value development. The presentation will conclude by reviewing an emerging cross disciplinary research network within the University of Brighton and public and private organisations within Brighton and Hove.
