From 26 July until 4 September 2008, Megha Rajguru (PhD candidate, School of Arts and Communication) is exhibiting two video artworks, a kinetic sculpture and a tactile sculpture at the SPACE C Gallery, Croydon Clocktower Museum.
This exhibition, From Shrine to Plinth is the outcome of Megha’s practice-led PhD research. She uses the museum space, its existing display of the Hindu shrine and her artworks to comment and reflect upon the role of the idol as an artifact in the museum and as a worshipped deity in the temple. The exhibition generates certain ritualistic responses in the museum visitor such as automated circumambulation of the deity, an immersive tactile experience with it in the created meditative multi-sensory environment. The artworks are site specific and transform the museum building into an installation space.
