Sequential Design and Illustration, Arts and Design by Independent Project, and Photography MA show opens in September

MA09 showcases diverse new work by students graduating from the MA courses in Sequential Design and Illustration, Arts and Design by Independent Project and Photography at the University of Brighton. From Friday 18 September to Monday 28 September, the exhibition will include film, illustrated books, video-game design, installation, performance art, interactive work, product design and photography.
The highly acclaimed Sequential Design and Illustration course attracts new and established illustrators, designers and makers from all over the world, keen to explore the principles of sequence within their chosen field. Work featured in the exhibition, ranging from a biography of Edith Sitwell to a series of calendars made from human hair, demonstrates the variety of individual research. Other work examines the legacy of recipes, children’s book narratives, the domestic life of objects and the love lives of playing cards.
The Arts and Design by Independent Project course encourages experimentation and innovation within a specific field on a central project. Students come from a wide range of disciplines, giving the course its characteristic diversity; the areas of study and possible outcomes are hugely varied. This year’s students include a filmmaker who weaves fabric patterns created by the directional movements of the body, a product designer whose subject is ‘the undesigned’ and a graphic designer documenting his entire life experiences through a comprehensive series of lists.
These internationally recognised postgraduate courses support self-initiated projects and help students to develop an informed, critical and imaginative view of the subject. This exhibition is a testament to their unique creative inquiry.
The Photography course encourages experimentation and innovation within a specific field on a central independent project, allowing students to develop an informed, critical and imaginative view of their own practice. Students come from a wide range of photographic, fine art and design fields, giving the course its characteristic diversity.This year’s graduates will be exhibiting a wide variety of work that aims to push the boundaries of documentary, editorial, landscape and still life photography. Using a range of different media – photography, video, holography, and modes of exhibition that range from the formal framed print to the installation, from photobook to plasma screen, their work demonstrates the wide variety of individual research projects undertaken on the course.
