University of Brighton is also ranked as the leading modern university in terms of the quality of its research by Research Fortnight.
Sixty-five per cent of research in art and design was classified as either 'world leading' or 'internationally excellent'. This places Brighton amongst the leading research centres in the country for art and design and Research Fortnight ranked the submission second in terms of the volume and quality of research.
Anne Boddington, Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Architecture said: "We are proud that we have a large, interdisciplinary Research Centre in art and design. We are strong in the arts in a university context which means that we can contribute to the broader research culture of the university. Our submission was truly interdisciplinary and includes people from across the institution in areas such as fine arts, sustainable design and cultural heritage."
Professor Bruce Brown, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research at the University of Brighton said: "The university has succeeded in broadening its research base and has driven up the quality of research across a larger range of subject areas. Seventy-nine per cent of our research is of international standing and we are also judged to be the leading modern university in terms of the quality of our research. Overall, we are determined this work will make substantial contributions to social, economic and cultural well-being.'
Pertinent to the Faculty of Arts & Architecture's many styles of research method and output, Professor Brown adds, 'For us there are only two types of research — applied research and yet to be applied research.'
