MA practitioners from the Faculty of Arts hold their annual show.
15 Aug 2013
MA2010 showcases diverse new work by students graduating from the MA courses in Sequential Design/ Illustration, and Art and Design by Independent Project at the University of Brighton. The exhibition includes film, illustrated books, narrative textiles, newspaper pages, jewelry, graphic design, and typography.
The highly acclaimed Sequential Design/ Illustration course attracts new and established illustrators, designers and makers from all over the world, keen to explore the principles of sequence within their chosen field. Work featured in the exhibition, ranging from scientific and philosophical notions of human individuality to a series of cover designs for books that were never written about Brighton, demonstrates the variety of individual research. Other work examines anthropomorphism in children’s book narratives, the irrational fear of dirt, the role of plumage in communication and Unfortunate Little Animals Squashed into Curious Tales for Sinister Children.
The Independent Art and Design course encourages experimentation and innovation within a specific field on a central project. Students come from a wide range of disciplines, giving the course its characteristic diversity; the areas of study and possible outcomes are hugely varied. This year’s students include a metalworker who incorporates films and religious imagery to explore perceived value, a designer creating jewelry that conveys human emotion and a textile designer who intervenes with nature through stitched repairs to foliage in an attempt to turn back the clock.
These internationally recognised postgraduate courses support self-initiated projects and help students to develop an informed, critical and imaginative view of the subject. This exhibition is a testament to their unique creative inquiry.
