Professor of Graduate Studies, Steven Miles, has led the development of this new masters degree, designed to develop the skills of researchers across the arts, design and humanities disciplines at the University of Brighton. The masters degree of MRes in Arts and Cultural Research will provide an excellent foundation for a career in research in industry. the public sector or in academic life.
Drawing on general and subject-specific research skills, the masters in research will allow students to tailor their own course to prepare them for future research practice either in their current professional roles or in research degrees.
At a time in which the cultural sector is increasingly under the microscope both academically and in the context of evaluation research, this course will provide the skills, critical perspectives and methodologies needed to undertake research in the broad arena of arts and culture. Students will choose subject-specialist options from the fields of art, design, humanities or sport and leisure cultures, while putting forward material that can form the basis of future research in the disciplinary areas of art and media, design and architecture, humanities, and sport and culture.
It is envisaged that the MRes will be a platform for entry to PhD study for practice-led and traditional research methods. It provides an excellent springboard upon which you can develop your understanding of the value and meaning of research, the validity and reliability of methods, the availability of cultural sources and the value of practice-based research.
