Two photography graduates shortlisted for the Photographer of the Year in the Guardian Student Media Awards 2010.

University of Brighton, Faculty of Arts graduates Portia Webb and Melanie Clark have been shortlisted for the Photographer of the Year in the Guardian Student Media Awards 2010.
The Photographer of the Year judges look for work that is ‘excellent, both artistically and technically'. First prize is one month’s work experience at the Guardian. Portia Webb and Melanie Clark both graduated from University of Brighton, Faculty of Arts Photography BA(Hons) in 2010.
Melanie Clark’s work Abreast of Stress reflects her experience of diagnosis with breast cancer during her time at the University of Brighton. In collaboration with Brighton Breast Cancer Support Group members Melanie’s work aims to express the myriad of emotions experienced by each individual.Melanie’s work Archive Revival was also the First Prize Winner of SHOTS magazine young photographers competition 2010.
In After, a series of photographs taken moments after childbirth, Portia Webb explores the duality of birth as an intimate and violent occurrence. Portia is currently a picture researcher for the Sunday Telegraph Magazine.
Portia said: “I am completely surprised at my Guardian nomination, being noticed and acknowledged is all a recently graduated photographer wants. I have had good feedback on my work from the public, however to receive constructive criticism or compliments in the professional world is wonderful.”
