HQ, Brighton Festival's Pop-up Social Club showcases second year Fine Art Printmakers
15 Aug 2013
HQ at Brighton Dome comprises: a spectacular installation by Gary Card, a daytime canteen featuring a fresh and seasonal menu by Bistrotheque, a programme of performance, and an exhibition of new work by second year BA(Hons) Fine Art Printmaking students from the University of Brighton.
The second year Fine Art Printmakers at the University of Brighton have been inducted into the traditional disciplines of lithography, silkscreen, etching and relief printing and are keen to challenge the traditional definition of printmaking.
As a diverse group they are not limited in their practice by media or materials and question what printmaking can be and exploit its diverse possibilities.
Francesca Horne makes work inspired by the history of the bombings between Coventry and Dresden during the Second World War and the modern architectural regeneration of these areas.
Penelope Kenny uses screen printing as medium to explore ideas inspired by mans relationship with other animals and chimera genetics, whilst Daisy Jarrett makes delicate etchings inspired by her collection of miniature houses that act as a powerful metaphor for the human condition.
In the installation commissioned by Brighton Festival, set designer Gary Card has created a 3D floating collage featuring shards of transparent acrylic to form a sharp-faceted abstract chandelier, backlit by the existing skylight to create a stained glass window effect.
Card is a young London designer regularly contributing to NY Times T Magazine having shot with Paolo Roversi and Sølve Sundsbø, and is currently immersed in Lady Gaga's new music video, as well as being himself a focus of Levi's latest ad campaign.
Private view for the Fine Art Printmakers at the University of Brighton exhibition Art in Print is Wednesday 5th May, 5.30-7.30. (Via entrance to HQ, next to the Corn exchange).
HQ at Brighton Dome is open Saturday 1- Sunday 23 May 2010
