Barbara Taylor and Carolyn Thompson present new digitisation work created in the Archives during 2010
15 Aug 2013
As part of the JISC-funded Look-Here! project, Barbara Taylor and Carolyn Thompson from the University of Brighton Design Archives will present new digitisation work created in the Archives during 2010, at a conference held at the Royal Institute for British Architects, in London on 8th February.
The Look-Here! project co-ordinated by the Visual Arts Data Service (VADS) aims to ‘develop a community of expertise in the creation, management and use of digitised library, museum, and archive collections for learning, teaching, and research in the creative arts.’ The conference will create an opportunity to enable those partner organisations involved in the project, including the Design Archives, to express their findings to one another, and other interested parties.
A significant series of photographic images relating to the 1951 Festival of Britain, can be found among the Design Archives material. The project made it possible for the Archives to explore and complete the digitisation of complementary documentation from the official Festival administrative files created by the Council of Industrial Design. The 60th anniversary of the Festival of Britain will be celebrated in 2011, and so this material is particularly relevant for digitisation at present, and the Archives anticipate considerable research interest in this area in the months ahead.
Barbara and Carolyn will present the culmination of their work at the conference, and discuss those issues raised in handling, scanning and delivering the digital images through online platforms, and the new procedures created as a result of this learning process, with reference to the scanning and delivery of documentation.
The resulting images will be available online shortly through the VADS website and the Archives Hub
