"I have illustrated many books in different media, but have always had a preference for my engraved work. In the last 15 years I have concentrated more on this area, particularly in children’s books, where I engrave both on wood and vinyl: I print and collage using textured surfaces mainly from the wood plank."
The childrens’ author and illustrator, Ian Archibald Beck studied at Brighton College of Art during the mid-1960s. In addition to his numerous children's books, Beck is also well known for his cover illustration for Elton John's, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album which was released in 1973.
"At Brighton my studio was in Tichbourne Street but I was asked to cover for a colleague. I moved into the wood studio and worked there in order that it could stay open for the students. During those three years I made the boardroom table for Templeton College Oxford (50 panels veneered on the old college vacuum press), most of the furniture for one of the Roxy Music band members and won the Sunday Telegraph Craftsman of the Year award.
Laurence Scarfe worked in wide range of visual disciplines: book and magazine illustration, poster and wallpaper design, mural painting, fine art and ceramic decoration. He taught at the Central School of Art from 1945 to 1970, followed by a decade at Brighton Polytechnic, lecturing on the history of illustration and graphic design.
Gerald Fleuss is a freelance calligrapher, letterer, and illustrator specialising in heraldic design and painting, a practice which he started in 1974. He is a Fellow of the Society of Scribes and Illuminators and a member of the Art Workers’ Guild and the Double Crown Club.
"While teaching at Brighton, I also organised exhibitions and oversaw the move of the Printmaking Department to the main Faculty of Art building. I also wrote or co-wrote four educational books on printmaking and used many photographs taken in the department to illustrate methods and best practice."
Going onto a career in film at UCLA, Sandra Lawton attended the Brighton College of Art's programme for gifted children between 1958 and 1965. Born in Margate in 1901, pioneering potter and teacher Norah Braden was the daughter of a lay preacher. Intensely musical as well as artistic, Braden learned to play the violin and was talented enough to reach concert standard; she considered studying music but declined an offer from the Royal College of Music.
Illustration graduate Jane Hissey's first picture book, 'Old Bear', published in 1986, was instantly acclaimed a new children's classic. Since then, Jane has written and illustrated over 20 picture books, each one taking a year to illustrate.
Julien Macdonald studied fashion knit wear at The University of Brighton, which lead to him receiving a scholarship for the Royal Collage of Art. His creative vision has inspired international acclaim for injecting a high dosage of glamour back into the fashion industry.
3D design tutor Sean Hetterley, was warmly remembered by colleagues for his murals at the annual Pottery Party.
Sean made a point of thoroughly researching the themes for his murals and he hoped that viewers grasped the literary allusions and intended parodies incorporated in them.
Derby-born John Biggs was an educator and prolific illustrator and author, writing more than twenty books on various aspects of illustration, lettering, typography and calligraphy. He was Head of Graphic Design at Brighton from 1951 to 1974.

After registering as an architect, David Clews spent ten years in practice before becoming a full-time academic. He joined the University of Brighton in 2000, as a Principal Lecturer, to lead the Academic Programme in Architecture & Interiors.

Stuart Morgan's critical writings established him as a leading writer on the art of the 1980s and 1990s. Travelling widely in Europe and the United States, he was widely admired by many artists as a result of his sensitivity to, and careful interpretation of, their opinions.
Peter Strausfeld was born in Cologne in 1910 and his engagement with expressionism, in the late 1920s and throughout the 1930s, defined his art. His life-long love of the woodcut and the linocut began here and his cinema posters are a natural reflection of this interest.
Chris Riddell studied Illustration at Brighton Polytechnic. He has drawn covers for Punch, Economist, New Statesman and Literary Review. and is Political Cartoonist on the Observer newspaper.

Biba founder Barbara Hulanicki attended Brighton College of Art in the 1950s, starting her career in fashion as a fashion illustrator. She covered all of the important fashion collections in Europe for the major publications of the day, including Women's Wear Daily, British Vogue, the Times, the Observer and the Sunday Times.
