A vocal performance by the interdisciplinary voice network group, Voice Laboratory
15 Aug 2013
The 'Musical 100 Metres' is a collaborative project by Nick Collins and Amy Cunningham for Voice Laboratory
9.58 and 10.49 seconds are intriguing times; they're not just current men's and women's 100 metres sprint World Records (at the time of writing) - they also represent a potential borderline of human short-term memory of approximately 3-12 seconds. 'The Musical 100 Metres: Replay' considers these 100m times as time spans for musical and sonic activity in the form of vocal performances. The performances will involve closely timed actions, voice endurance, athletic vocal warm ups, singing relays, and visual paraphernalia of Olympic sports.
In July this year, Voice Laboratory performed their Olympic themed vocal work in Jubilee Square as part of Soundwaves Festival and Stadium Creative Campus Initiative exhibition, at the University of Brighton Gallery.
For this concert the original performance will be mediated, replayed and measured with reference to the authenticating and judging devices such as the slow motion tracking shot and action replay in photographs and moving image, used in athletics and other Olympic sports. The performance will include a series of live vocal pieces in response to these themes by Sam Belinfante, Nick Collins, Amy Cunningham, Lore Lixenberg and Jade Pybus.
The 'Musical 100 Metres' artists are:Sam Belinfante; Martha Brown; Caroline Buckley; Nick Collins; Amy Cunningham; Conall Gleeson; Lore Lixenberg; Ania Psenitsnikova; Jade Pybus; and Anna Vauhkonen.
