Indian internship for Architecture graduate

Faculty Architecture student Lily Dowse, BA(Hons) Architecture has accepted a seven month internship working for the Tibet Heritage Fund (THF) high up in the Indian Himalayas.

Lily will be working in the Old Town of a place called Leh in Ladahk where design projects include the Central Asian Museum, the Trans-Himalayan Research, village clinics and school rooms, and more exhibition space and museums elsewhere.

The THF is an international non-profit organisation committed to the preservation of Tibet’s architectural heritage, and to improving the lives of people living in traditional and historic settlements through sustainable development.

Lily said: “I am totally over the moon as it's a project that I saw when I was last out in India and I have been wanting to work with them for ages.”

THF promotes environmentally and climate sensitive architecture and Lily will be helping to restore and rebuild anything from ancient temples to community housing. She expects the project to be ‘quite hands on’. She said ”Leh is fantastic place, a very forward thinking as a city, with a huge support system for women's rights and a brilliant agricultural drive for a return back to the roots which keeps out large corporations.”

Before her departure to India, Lily will collect her award at the Winter graduation ceremony on Thursday, 9 February at the Brighton Dome.

The BA(Hons) Architecture course aims to foster and develop skills that will equip students for creative and critical citizenship and professionalism and the development of active participation both regionally, nationally and internationally.
