Faculty of Arts' Circus Street annexe development to provide library and student accommodation
15 Aug 2013
Plans to regenerate the area of Circus Street in Brighton were approved by Brighton and Hove City Council‘s cabinet last week.
The University of Brighton is developing part of the Faculty of Arts campus to provide additional accommodation for 400 students and a new university library in collaboration with Cathedral Group. The site will also include a dance studio, offices and shops.
The site includes the faculty’s existing annexe building in Circus Street, former wholesale fruit and vegetable market in Kingswood Street and NCP car park on Carlton Hill.
The building work is expected to create over 100 construction jobs in the short term and 170 new vacancies when work is completed. The regeneration is also expected to inject £150 million into the local economy over ten years.
Work is expected to start in June 2013, completing during the 2014/15 academic year. Vice-Chancellor Julian Crampton said: “We have long been active supporters of the need to regenerate this area of the city. The redevelopment will enable us to enhance the activities and presence of the University of Brighton Faculty of Arts and signals a major investment in the creative, cultural and digital sector for the city.”
