Fine Art Sculpture BA(Hons) graduate Nina Mae Fowler has been named Saatchi’s ‘One to Watch’ and Best of 2013.
She has also been nominated for the BP Portrait Prize, as well as being shortlisted for both the Jerwood Drawing Prize and the Young Masters Prize 2012.
Steeped in the saturated glitz of golden-era Hollywood, Fowler’s work combines three-dimensional and graphic forms to explore the contrast of the surface’s shimmer and an anxiety over the emptiness it might conceal. Citing Kenneth Anger’s ‘Hollywood Babylon’ as a formative influence, she pays due attention to what Anger called ‘the scalding reality behind the glittering facade of America’s dream factory.’
Fowler’s work is admired and collected by British film, music and fashion luminaries such as John Maybury, Jude Law, Sharleen Spiteri and Caroline Issa. She is included in private and public collections in Europe and the USA and is represented in France and Germany by Galerie Dukan.
A solo exhibition of Fowler’s work marks the opening of a new exhibition space at Galerie Dukan runs from 11 January to 22 February 2014.
