A collection of photographs taken during the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 is about to be published by Internationally acclaimed Magnum photographer and University of Brighton Professor, Mark Power.
Power was in Berlin "by mistake" when the Wall fell and, after a quarter of a century, has decided to publish his photographs of the event, together with an essay he has written which relates the story of why he was there.
Die Mauer ist Weg! is Power’s first book under his new imprint, Globtik Books and is timed for release on 9 November 2014, the day of the 25th anniversary of the Wall’s demise. Purchase a copy of Mark Power's Die Mauer ist Weg!
The book is bound as a pastiche of a newspaper Power purchased in Berlin the morning after, embossed into heavy-duty cardboard.
While the early pages read as news-based photojournalism, as the book unfolds Power retreats away from the epicentre of the event to re-camp over the border in an almost desolate East Berlin. From there he views the story from another perspective, before embarking on a search for Bertolt Brecht’s grave.
The book is both a record of a major 20th century news event and a fascinating tale of chance and choice. Power describes the book as a "critical soul-searching about the lessons learnt from the experience".
