RIBA South East sponsor a student prize for Brighton Architecture Department each year.
This year Rebecca Sturgess was awarded the undergraduate student prize for her proposal for a new Paper Quarter in Lewes Phoenix Estate. The judges enjoyed her brave reuse of existing buildings, the renewal of a community of printers, book binders and writers and the highly innovative development and use of a new building material – papercrete.
The postgraduate prize went to Sebastian Elliot who was also interested in the restoration of lost industries that had put Sussex on the map, this time the reintroduction of the Shoreham Film Industry.
Tony Foulger, the RIBA Sussex Chair said “we were extremely impressed with the standard of the presentation, thought process and standard of the designs.”
