Annabel Birtles was a Fine Art Painting student at Brighton Polytechnic. In memoriam of her death, which occurred during the second year of her studies, her family set up the Annabel Birtles Award in collaboration with the then Head of Fine Art Gwyther Irwin, Ian Potts and Peter Hawes.
The award was made on an annual basis to support a second year student considered to demonstrate ‘talent and great effort in painting’ and consisted of a cash prize of £400 and the purchase of a work by the student.
The award continued up to the early 2000’s when Tony Wilson was in charge of painting and administered the prize of behalf of the University.
