Born in Hove, Knight first painted his father, a keen amateur watercolourist. At Brighton School of Art he was taught by Louis Ginnett. He gained the Art Teachers Diploma in 1923 and a scholarship to the RA where he won a Turner Gold Medal for Landscape. Knight was a full-time lecturer in Brighton from 1924. He painted throughout Britain and abroad but loved Sussex best, eventually settling in Ditchling. As his reputation grew he only taught two days a week but valued contact with students and remained on the staff until 1939.
In true topographical tradition, Knight grew familiar with the features of the South Downs landscape and with the nuances of light, colour and atmosphere that varied with the weather. Numerous undated studies remained in his studio after he died in 1990.
