George Reuben Ruff, known as George Ruff Junior (c. 1858-1913) was the son of George Ruff, a painter and photographer active in Brighton. He worked as a photographer and artist, and Ruff's meticulous studies won prizes, 1873-75. Aged 13, he called himself 'Art Student' but from 14 he wrote 'Occupation: Photographer'. His insignia evolved to an elegant monogram. Observation, imagination and geometrical drawing skills were the essentials prescribed by the Department of Education and Science. Ruff's drawing was 'certified as execution in the school according to the regulations' and endorsed by the signature of Alexander Fisher, Headmaster 1871-92.
