  • John Holloway has photographed the chalk Downs of southern England for the last twenty-five years. His images reveal both its geological structure and the surface markings of man and animals.

Often working from a light aircraft, travelling at eighty miles per hour, Holloway is able to see his subjects in low relief: animal tracks, fences, furrows, rivers, archaeological remains and the chalk Hill Figures. It is only in late March and late September that the angle of the sun on the north-facing slopes of the Downs reveals the texture of these features.
