Screen Archive contributes to exploration of seaside history.

‘Seebäder - Brighton' ('Seaside Resorts – Brighton’) is a new film by Kristian Kähler und Martin Koddenberg, produced by Fernseh büro, Berlin. It will be broadcast May 14 on the ARTE channel in Germany, Belgium, Austria, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Portugal and Israel.
The film is the third episode of a 5-part series on seaside resorts. The 43-minute documentary explores Brighton’s history from the Regency period to the 21st century, looking at how visitors have enjoyed Brighton’s many pleasures: from a day on the pier and sea bathing to the Duke of York’s cinema and the city’s vibrant nightlife.
An interview with Dr. Frank Gray, director of Screen Archive South East, provides background on Brighton’s place in film history. There is also historic footage from ‘Bank Holiday at the Dyke’, the 1898 James Williamson film showing holiday makers enjoying a visit to Devil’s Dyke.
