Featured in this summer's Twixt Two Worlds

Screen Archive South East (SASE) has contributed two films to the Contemporary Art Society's exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery: Twixt Two Worlds, 10 June- 31 August 2014.
The display maps the pivotal moment in cinema history when still photography evolved into moving images. Inspired by the Barnes brothers’ collection of early projection apparatus at the Royal Pavilion and Museums, Brighton and Hove, this shift is explored through objects, printed materials and films. SASE films are The Artist's Nightmare, 1908, Warwirck Trading Company and the digital reconstruction by SASE's Nicholas Clark of an early Kinemacolor film Two Clowns, 1906, George Albert Smith.
On show are magic lanterns and slides from the late 19th century and films and photographs by pioneers such as William Friese-Greene and Eadweard Muybridge, alongside contemporary artists including Susan Hiller and Saskia Olde Wolbers who revisit the history and techniques of early film.
This display is part of the Whitechapel Gallery’s programme opening up art collections and is made in collaboration with the Contemporary Art Society and Arts Council-funded Curatorial Fellow Gaia Tedone, supported by the Royal Pavilion, Museums and Libraries, Brighton and Hove.
